One of the most essential items I carry with me to my outcall Deep Esalen bodywork is a table warmer, as one of the variables that’s difficult to control in an in-home massage is the
temperature of a client’s domicile.
An electric table warmer soothes the cold, drafty edges of a handsome San Francisco Victorian, or brings portable warmth to a homey Aspen, Colorado ski cottage, or a session in a client’s backyard. And, believe it or not, I’ve often used table warmers in Palm Springs, where air conditioning makes indoor living more comfortable…until you hop on the table and under the top sheet!
Under-heating during a massage is a real phenomenon. People with clothes on often do not make the connection as to how chilled they will get when they take their clothes off to receive a relaxing deep tissue massage. Being cold kills the zen.
In all my years of massage, I’ve traveled with my table warmer, a fleece-lined, cushiony layer that I add to the table as I set up. I don’t know where I got the idea to include the table warmer in my set-up, but it just makes sense and I’ve always enjoyed having that cozy feeling when I receive massages myself.
For a client, an added bonus is that constant warmth tends to be deeply relaxing. For me, it is delightful to navigate the pliable, heated muscle tissue when the soothed client flips over during
the midpoint of the massage. Table warmers are an essential addition to a delightful outcall massage experience
